The nation's Interior Minister the interior minister has declared that opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over accusations that he provoked "aggressive electoral rallies".

A minimum of four protesters have been killed during skirmishes between security forces and protesters since the presidential election on 12 October, with the 92-year-old head of state obtaining an eighth presidential mandate.

The opposition leader insists that he was the true winner, a statement dismissed by the incumbent party, the CPDM.

Aggressive responses by police and security officers on protesters have alarmed the global community, with the UN, African Union and European Union demanding caution.

Official's Allegations

On Tuesday, Nji accused the opposition figure of organising what he referred to as "unauthorized" rallies leading to the loss of lives, and also criticised him for claiming win in the election.

He noted that the opposition leader's "associates behind an subversive plot" will also undergo judicial processes.

Election Results

Paul Biya, who took control in 1982 and is now the most elderly national leader, secured the 12 October presidential election with a majority of the votes, compared to a significant minority for the challenger, according to the electoral authority.

Challenger's Position

The opposition figure is remains silent to the government's decision to try him, but he had previously declared that he refused to acknowledge a rigged election - and that he was fearless of being arrested.

On election result day, he said that gunmen opened fire on demonstrators assembled near his residence in the city of Garoua, killing at least 2 people.

Inquiry Launched

On Tuesday, the government official revealed that an probe would be started into unrest surrounding the declaration of the vote outcome.

"In the course of these incidents, some of the individuals involved were killed," he commented, without providing a precise figure of demonstrators who have been fatally injured in the confrontations.

Nji further mentioned that several personnel of the police and military also suffered serious injuries.

Ongoing Circumstances

While Nji insisted the condition nationwide was now stable, demonstrators continue to protest in certain regions of the country, especially in these two cities, where demonstrators mounted barricades on Tuesday, and ignited rubber on the roads.
