Born in Trowbridge in 1931, he became known as a beloved figure who popularised classical music for millions.
His tenure as the BBC's head of music and arts in the 1960s and 70s was marked by critically praised work, including the programme The Golden Ring.
The creation of the Young Musician of the Year in 1978, his initiative, propelled the careers of musicians like Nicola Benedetti.

The news was met with an outpouring of tribute, with many citing his formative role for generations of creators.
