Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just several days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became widely known.
Summers commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have participated, excited about the prospects of the organization, and eagerly await observing their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, declared on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released messages demonstrated that the economist communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 apprehension for accused sex trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the AI firm stated it accepted Summers' decision to depart.
"We value his numerous inputs and the perspective he provided to the governing body," OpenAI commented.
Congressional Action
This announcement comes after both chambers of the US legislature decided on this week to endorse a legislation that would compel the US justice department to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will afterward move to the office of US President Donald Trump for signature. He has indicated he plans to approve the bill, after reversing his position on the issue following objections from his supporters.
Email Contents
A batch of Epstein-connected emails made public by the legislative panel last week mentioned several prominent individuals in the Epstein's former circle, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The emails showed that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with he often seeking to link the academic to influential international personalities.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were shared with the wider community, Summers said he accepted "total ownership for my poor decision to persist in corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he hoped "to restore confidence and fix connections with the people most important to me".
Professional History
The economist held leadership roles under party leaders; acting as economic leader under the former president, and as leader of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He headed the institution from the early 2000s and continues to be a academic there. When announcing his departure from public roles earlier on Monday, he said he would maintain his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive research organization in the capital where Summers was a researcher, verified that he was not affiliated with the institution.
The former official became part of the directorate of the AI company, which creates the language model, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO OpenAI's head.
