Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months left on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
