Outrage Surges as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Fierce Backlash
Individuals from both sides of the political aisle and the entertainment industry are uniting to censure former President Donald Trump for his statements following the tragic deaths of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Online Post
After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump took to his platform to label the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". The post, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Police Update and Arrest
Police have since announced the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the case. It is reported his bail was established at a significant amount.
A Wave of Condemnation from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.
“What a vile and vile statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the remarks. She pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "This is a sick man."
Echoing this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from His Own Party
A number of GOP elected officials also expressed disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also alluded to challenges with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.
Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his political party to justify the statements.
The Director's History and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy if Trump be reelected to power.
"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced violence for political ends unequivocally after the shooting of a different political figure.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the session, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
