The gravest projected effects of the climate emergency for the UK have been outlined by researchers, including a scorching 4C jump in average temperatures to a 6.5-foot increase in sea levels. An alternative projection predicts a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset food production and energy demand.

Credible Events, Not Guarantees

These consequences, a number of which are associated with climate tipping points, are considered as unlikely but plausible. The team said that these scenarios addressed a shortfall in risk assessment that had left the UK unprepared for catastrophic possibilities.

"The severe weather events we have mapped are not forecasts, but they are credible," said the professor who led the study. "The UK has been planning without the frameworks to test against catastrophic outcomes. We've now provided policymakers what they need to plan for future conditions they hope never happen, but dare not dismiss."

A Range of Harsh Climate Scenarios

A further series of severe models maps the possible scale of extreme weather between now and the end of the century. These suggest that temperatures could soar in some months by up to 6C above the norm, while precipitation could be 300% of standard measurements.

The likelihood of the worst-case outcomes happening could not be calculated due to a lack of certainty about what measures will be implemented to address global warming and how the climate system will respond. This analysis was described as similar to national security risk assessments or stress tests for the banking sector.

Critical Scenario Details

• Four-Degree Warming: Planetary heating rising well above 4C by 2100 could happen if international cooperation collapses or if vicious cycles such as the Amazon rainforest becoming a net carbon source emit its enormous store of carbon. This would cause intense and enduring heatwaves and droughts plaguing the UK in summer.
• Ocean Circulation Failure: A critical sea current, the AMOC, is losing strength and losing stability due to global heating. A complete failure beginning in 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Agriculture would face immense difficulties and freshwater availability would be fundamentally reshaped," explained the lead researcher.
• Sudden Ocean Inundation: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if polar ice in the Arctic and Antarctic melt abruptly, flooding seaside communities. In contrast to the other scenarios, this threat is already understood by infrastructure experts.
• Pollution Paradox: Temperatures could also be increased by about 0.75C if industrial aerosols is sharply cut. This unexpected result occurs because pollution particles from industrial activity reflect sunlight from reaching the ground.

Preparing for the Unthinkable

These dire projections could be applied to guide the building of major projects, such as expanded cities, nuclear power stations and flood defences. Understanding these future hazards could also hasten the transition to slash greenhouse gas emissions.

The study developed the severe projections using a blend of observed and historical experience, digital projections and scientific theory. The possibilities omit broader worldwide issues like the global food shortages and increased conflict.

The project was initiated as part of a official risk assessment framework. Independent analyses have cautioned that not enough attention was being paid to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.

An independent advisory body has stated that the UK must "become resilient to moderate heating" and evaluate the threats for 4C. Previous adaptation plans have been criticised as being "very weak" by certain experts.
