The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit series coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get swayed by the constant speculation and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to force fed something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it from others, and that's intentional. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Will the creator Know the Ending of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren’t being guided by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We have some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
