The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about following this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
