US Mediates Ukrainian Talks in Abu Dhabi as Trump Administration Seeks for Settlement
Diplomatic talks with American, Russian, and Kyiv delegates are underway in the United Arab Emirates this week, representing the most recent stage in initiatives to achieve a peace agreement to end the protracted hostilities in Ukraine.
High-Level Delegates and Opening Talks
American military Secretary the US representative allegedly conferred with a Russian group on the eve of the talks, with dialog extending into the following day.
“Discussions are progressing positively and we maintain hope. He is working in tight alignment with Washington as discussions unfold,” a spokesman remarked.
Ukraine’s top intelligence official, Kyrylo Budanov, was anticipated to participate in the meetings, though it remained unclear whether face-to-face engagement with Russian delegates would take place or if distinct bilateral sessions would be held.
Identity of the Russian group was unconfirmed. “No comment is available. Our position is to monitor press coverage,” a Kremlin spokesperson informed state media.
Background and Revised Proposal
The current talks follow prior discussions in a European nation where US and Ukrainian officials revised a draft American proposal for resolving the conflict.
Moscow has so far not accepted the most recent draft of the proposal and is unlikely to agree to many of the Kyiv amendments.
Moscow’s top diplomat, Sergei Lavrov, emphasized that any amended peace plan must adhere to the “essence and wording” of what was agreed during previous high-level talks between both countries.
Global Responses and Concerns
EU leaders are reportedly finding it difficult to stay engaged in the negotiations as American officials assume control.
The Finnish president, Alexander Stubb, who has stepped forward as a primary interlocutor between the US and EU leaders, stated that the next few days would be crucial in attempts to secure a resolution.
He allegedly held discussions with Kyiv’s leader and Nato officials, stating that “The future of Ukraine is for Ukraine to decide, and European security is for Europe to decide.”
Meanwhile, the France’s leader, the French official, warned against a settlement that would amount to a “concession” for the nation.
“Terms presented suggest what Russia could agree to. However, must Kyiv and European nations consent to these terms? Certainly not,” he stated.
Details of the Initial US Proposal
The US plan was originally made up of multiple articles and was drawn from dialog between US and Moscow representatives, with input from Ukrainian security officials.
Major aspects of the plan reportedly involved:
- The nation relinquishing areas presently held by Russia
- Further zones that might be expected to be willingly given up
- Restrictions on the size of the Ukrainian army
- Immunity for all participants in the conflict regarding war crimes
Recent Developments and Continuing Difficulties
The US official reportedly traveled to Kyiv to update Zelenskyy on the proposal and urge rapid acceptance.
This demand, combined with the disclosure of the plan, reportedly took by surprise Ukrainian and European officials.
The Ukrainian president stated that the country was facing one of the hardest periods in its existence and was being compelled to decide between “losing our dignity or losing a key ally.”
Later, the US official informed Nato ambassadors on the proposal in Kyiv, with one participant describing it as “a nightmare meeting” and stating that EU ambassadors were shocked by both the substance and tone of the delivery.
The US administration later softened its stance, indicating that the comprehensive proposal was an “starting position for talks” rather than a final ultimatum.
Security Situation Amid Negotiations
While peace talks continue, Moscow has continued its regular strikes on Ukrainian urban centers.
Russian forces allegedly launched dozens of missiles and many of unmanned aircraft at targets in and around the capital, according to Ukrainian reports.
Zelenskyy stressed that Moscow must not feel it could prevail in the war while talks were underway.
“Crucially, all allies must advance toward diplomacy collectively, with unified action. Measures against Russia need to produce tangible effects,” he stated.
Kyiv’s mayor confirmed that multiple people had been killed in the overnight attack on the capital.
